Here are some tips to make your pantry the most functional space in your home.
A great way to start is to go through everything, toss expired products and donate ingredients you’re never going to use.
Then, look at your pantry like we do: as a clean slate—nothing standing in the way of organizing for the greatest efficiency. Sketch out your plan on paper.
If you have the room, start by adding a countertop workspace along one or more walls. Our customers who have added this feature tell us it’s priceless as a place to store and use those can’t-live-without-appliances like a microwave/convection oven, blender, air fryer… you get the picture. Better yet, those appliances will no longer clutter your food prep space in the kitchen.
Add carefully spaced shelves to hold all those bottles and cans and less frequently used appliances. Then, optimize the shelves with can organizers, Lazy Susans, acrylic bins and tiered risers for better visibility and specially designed spice racks to put what you need at your fingertips. If you’ve ever knocked items off the shelf reaching for the vinegar in the back, consider storing taller bottles in bins that can pull out to make it easier to access the items in the back.
Below your new countertop is a great place to add some drawers to store all those cooking tools, snacks and condiments. Consider using drawer organizers to keep everything in its place.
Pull-out baskets are a great way to store root vegetables for long shelf life. And be sure to separate the onions and the potatoes to prevent premature spoiling.
Invest in some clear acrylic or glass air-tight storage containers for those packaged goods that don’t stand nicely on a shelf, such as rice, cereal, crackers and cookies.
Finally, remember the little things that make it a joy to enter your pantry…a hook for your favorite apron, a framed recipe card from your grandmother or even a picture of your kids making cookies at the holidays. While it adds no practical value, the pleasure it will bring you each time you cook is immeasurable.
